Artist Statement
Glass is amazing, opaque and translucent, joyful and mysterious. I LOVE working with it, thinking about it, seeing others’ work! I’m obsessed – I admit it: I even dream about glass – and frequently have my best ideas in the middle of the night. Over the last few years, I’ve been obsessed with adding imagery to glass. I’ve used a variety of techniques: sand-blasting, painting, more traditional screen printing (with enamels in a medium) and most recently, dry powder printing. Dry powder printing pushes glass powders through a prepared screen, creating a softer image.Working with glass appeals to both my art and science backgrounds: I look at glass’ duality – an amazing mysterious material that responds to gravity and heat, sometimes predicable, sometimes not. As I’ve explored the behavior of glass, I’ve learned that my pieces are collaborative — my kiln and I both do our part. Sometimes, we don’t agree on the final form; then I explore the secrets that allow me to create my vision. It’s an exciting journey.
Biography
After years of working in different media, Sherry G Selevan discovered fused glass 10 years ago. She brings that varied experience to her work in glass. A background in science gives her insight into the behavior of glass when heated and manipulated. Most recently, she has combined her love of imagery with glass, screen-printing and fusing glass powders on a base. This technique enhances her work with its texture and depth.
Sherry is a Resident Artist at the Art Glass Center at Glen Echo National Park. She teaches a variety of beginning and more advanced classes in glass techniques, including: powder screen printing, creating with recycled/reclaimed glass, strip-piecing, weaving, vitrography, among others.
Her work is found at ArtfulHome.com and DC area galleries including the Art Glass Center. Sherry is active in the National Capital Art Glass Guild (www.ncagg.org), having served in a variety of roles including president.
